Women’s roles were greatly changed in the 1950s, with the men coming back from war and taking their jobs back. Women had, during World War II, taken men’s jobs while they had been away at war. After the war, many women wanted to keep their jobs. Many of them became wives and mothers as the men came back from the war. Very few women held the positions they had taken over for the men. Women returned to the belief of confomity with themselves and their families to meet society's expectations.
The role of women in the 1950 was repressive in many ways. Society placed high importance and many expectations on behavior at home as well as in public. Women were supposed to fulfill certain roles, such as a caring mother, a diligent homemaker, and an obedient wife. The perfect mother was supposed to stay home and nurture so society would accept them. Women were regarded useless in the form of religion again, even with the large amounts of contributions they had towards churches and religion in general. The nightmare of not being active relgiously through a church or preaching continued just like before the war had started.
