Women in Puritan society fulfilled a number of different roles. Women acted as farm hands, tending their vegetable gardens. As wives they were responsible for caring for their husband and as mothers, producing and guiding the next generation of Puritan children. In addition, although their legal rights were limited, some Puritan women were able to become the breadwinners of their families through the sale of goods they produced or animals they raised. The most important role for a Puritan woman was that of the mother.
Women in the sense of religion, carried a heavier burden due to the depiction of Eve’s actions in the Garden of Eden from the old testament. Women weren't allowed to speak as well, especially during church service and had to be silent throughout the whole service. Noticeably, the only time women were allowed to speak about theology would be during appropriate times in all female groups. If a women was seen actively engaged in the practice of religion, the consequences endured were extremely harsh.
